Our Nine Year Old!

Gabrielle turned NINE on February 20th. And, as I try to do near all our kids' birthdays, here's some info on our birthday girl...

Best friends: her cousins Meleesa and Athena, her best school buddy Jorja, her soccer friends (Jordan W, Jaida, Ashley, Isabella, Kyndsi, and more) and her other school friends (Sara, Emma and Christina)

Favorite pastimes: Soccer, soccer and more soccer (though she much prefers games over practices); watching The Disney Channel; play dates with Jorja, Athena and Meleesa, basketball (which she likes but doesn't love like soccer); playing with nail polish, jewelry, cell phones, etc; Just Dance on the Wii; playing with her little sister; drawing in her journal (she's been drawing dress designs lately); shopping; watching gymnastics.

School stuff: Gabrielle is a great reader though it is not her favorite pastime; math also comes easily to her; she is an all-around good student and school comes easy to her but she definitely prefers the weekends :); she reminds me of myself with regard to school. Elle says she wants to be a professional soccer player, physical therapist or accountant when she grows up.

Gabrielle is very aware and responsible. She is very caring and loving toward her siblings (most of the time :) as well as her friends and us (mom and dad). We are so lucky to get a kiss, hug goodnight and an 'I Love You' from her every night without us asking. She is very patient and gentle with Genevieve.

People will often comment that she looks and acts a lot older than she is; with coaches, teachers and other parents, she is always very good and polite.

Gabrielle has matured a lot in controlling her frustration though it sometimes still comes up (in the form of a slammed door, stomp up the stairs or a loud 'UGH')! Elle does a lot of things well but when she cannot do something easily or the first time she will often get frustrated and say she cannot do it....but, usually after she gets over her frustration and tries again, she manages to figure it out.

Height: 4 ft. 9.5 inches
Weight: about 97 lbs

Gabrielle's Family Birthday Party

Friday evening we celebrated Gabrielle's birthday with our families. It was relaxing and fun. The kids mostly played some Wii and watched TV while the adults chatted the evening away.  Uncle Marcus, Chad and Cade did get in a good game of 'HORSE' with the little nerf basketball and hoop; Cade tells me he won but I should verify that with Chad and Marcus :) We all enjoyed yummy cake, ice cream, pizza and lots of other treats....

Asleep in the Highchair!

Genevieve fell asleep in her highchair for the first time today. She had just come in from a little walk on the dairy with Uncle David and I wanted to give her some lunch before her nap but she just couldn't stay awake! Luckily I was able to clean her up and put her in her crib for a nice long nap!

Harlem Globetrotters!

On Friday evening we watched the Harlem Globetrotters at Mac Court. Chad and I were joined by our four kids, Grandma Bev, Jorja and cousins Meleesa, Athena and Pascal. The kids had such a blast and we had fun too, though the best part was watching our kids' reactions (mostly lots of belly laughs) to it all. Willem and Meleesa laughed the most and the loudest but all the kids thought it was the funniest thing ever! We even stayed 30 minutes after the game so the kids could get autographs. A huge thank you to my sis in-law Mary's friend, Megan, who got us our ten tickets!!!

Plan B

We are missing a few pieces to the gate we use by the stairs (it's been a long time since we used it for Willem), so we've been making due with the set-up below....

But this morning, I was at the computer and I heard Genevieve playing away in the hall and I also heard her moving chairs. Then I heard her saying 'uhuhuh' in a playful voice. So, I go check on her and she had methodically moved the chairs, pulled down the gate and was halfway up the stairs looking at me and smiling. Guess we have to figure out a new set-up!

This all reminds me a bit of Willem who is very independent, likes to just figure things out on his own and it takes him a while to get frustrated. Nev is also independent and seems to like being a little funny though she does seem a little more cautious than Willem who would have been up the stairs and into something up there without calling for me. It's so much fun to get these little glimpses into our kids' personalities!

One more sweet glimpse into Nev's personality: if we say, 'no' sternly at all, she stops, gets a very shocked, sad face, her lips go downward and she breaks out into a very pathetic cry. Sometimes the cry is delayed 15 or more seconds.

Genevieve is 14 Months...

...and so much fun!

Genevieve loves to be outside and she's lucky to have her Opa and two Uncles that visit us most days (okay, we work together...but sometimes that's just an excuse to see Genevieve :) and often take her outside to visit the cows. On Friday, the weather was beautiful and she got several trips outside including one with me. And she was so happy to run in the grass and play with the many balls that are outside our house...

Genevieve voices her opinion a lot more lately but she's still pretty easy to please. She loves to play with balls, loves to dance and loves the cows. She also loves to pick out and change shoes, socks and sometimes clothes.

Genevieve is sleeping great now. Usually from 8 pm until 7 am and then takes a nap in her crib for about 1.5-2 hours and then a short one in the car later in the day. She rarely sleeps with us anymore...usually just on the weekends when we try to sleep in a little later than 7 am.

Genevieve 'talks' a bunch though a lot of it is babble! She does say please, mom, dad, cade & elle a lot as well numerous other words though not consistently or very understandably.

Genevieve is pretty independent and fearless. She loves to walk off (away from me) and explore  wherever we are, never looking back to see if I (or anyone else she knows) am following. She does get the best excited look when I catch up to her or she see me after she's been off on an adventure (usually followed by her sis or bro or a cousin)!

We Love You, Sweet Genevieve!

Gabrielle's Birthday Party with Friends

I can't believe our girl is 9 years old today! We will have a family party next weekend but yesterday afternoon we celebrated Gabrielle's birthday at The Potters' Quarter with her friends. Elle invited her 'Athletica' soccer team plus three additional girls from her class; 15 girls in all. What a great group of girls. They all had a blast together and you could see how much they enjoy one another; the hugs were so genuine and the joy very evident. The girls were busy much of the time on their pottery as well as visiting and finally enjoying cake and gifts. Gabrielle got spoiled with gift cards to Jamba Juice, Target, Claires and Justice as well as with a soccer ball, basketball, jewelry, games, clothes, a Webkinz and even a monkey pillow and blanket. But mostly she was spoiled with lots of love and friendship.

Happy 9th Birthday to Our Sweet Elle! We Love You So Very Much!

This is so 'Sick'

Yes, that's what our six year old said the other day (and I've since heard it a couple other times) when he received a hand-me-down soccer jersey from his cousin. He looked at the jersey and said, "This is so SICK, Mom, it's awesome"! Where did he learn that!?

Willem also tells me his favorite songs are 'Stronger', Right-Round', 'You Know You Want Me', 'Fireflies' plus two others I can't remember. I didn't even know he knew those songs but after hearing one of them on the radio, he told me, "This is one of my favorite songs; I have six favorite songs, Mom, they are....." and he preceded to rattle all six of them off like he'd put some thought into it! Since then we've been listening to Genevieve's Bear Sing-Along cd in the car rather than the radio :)

It all makes me wonder what he'll be telling me when he's  ten or sixteen!

Some Basketball

Cade played in another basketball tournament this weekend. His team played great in pool play, winning both games Saturday. Cade played really well and it was a lot of fun watching him. Today, they played in the semi's and then the 3rd place game and had a tougher time; Cade got three early fouls in the first game and never got in a rhythm. He played better in the 2nd game but they were outmatched; his team ended up 4th out of nine solid teams. Cade played with 'Flight White' (he usually plays with 'Flight Black') in the 4th grade division. The teams are gearing toward the state tourney March 13-14. It's been a very busy month for Cade as he balances soccer and basketball. His soccer season is in full gear now (outdoor games started last weekend; practices started mid-January) so he often has two intense practices after school. It's been tough at times but we are proud of Cade and how hard he works; he never questions whether he wants to continue playing both sports at a relatively high level (for his age)...'of-course, I do, mom'...he tells me when I start to worry about him :)

Happy Valentines to all! As you can see most of our day was spent in a gym. We did have a nice dinner out with friends last night and Chad, the kids and I exchanged Valentines when we got home. Tonight we relaxed at home and watched a couple rented movies. It was just nice to spend the weekend together with my five Valentines!

Our Shoe Girl!

Genevieve loves shoes. She loves trying hers, mine, her siblings, any(!) shoes on and she loves carrying them around. The past couple weeks, Nev's been asking me to put different shoes on her feet by bringing them to me and saying 'uh-uh-uh-uh'. Yesterday she starting bringing me her clothes and doing the same thing. It seems we may have a girl with a penchant for dress-up! I see ten outfits a day in my future! For now, it is pretty cute and sweet to see her interest in it all!

Hockey Player?

Willem lost his top front tooth this week. And, with the other front tooth he knocked out a couple years ago and the gash near his eye, he's really looking like a hockey player! Soon the other front tooth will come out and I'm afraid he'll look like an 90 year old with no teeth! The tooth fairy always gives a little extra for the two center front teeth, so Willem got $3.

Bathtime

I always love the pictures of my babies in the bathtub but I haven't taken many pictures of Genevieve bathing. There are a few reasons for this. First of all, Genevieve hasn't really liked taking baths and so, I give her fewer baths plus when I do bathe her they are either quick or I am holding on to her arm because it takes her a while to actually sit down as she needs and ease into it (if I force it either her body becomes stiff as a board or she arches her back)! Nev did used to like her baths and I am sure she will again but for now, we don't take them more than a couple times a week. I was glad when yesterday Gabrielle decided she wanted to take some pictures while I bathed Genevieve...

just standing in the tub at first

Wanting to get out though not protesting too hard

Playing with the water coming out of the faucet

 Getting a little more wet

Deciding it's okay to squat in the water :)

And, finally, all the way in...by now the water is way deeper than I would otherwise have it. I usually keep a hold of her arm fearing if she slipped and went under she'd put up more of a fight. But I let go for a quick picture. Sometimes she lets me put her in the bath seat but lately she wants to move around more in the tub once she's comfortable.

And, finally enjoying it and feeling comfortable

Gotta have at least one of these in her scrapbook :)
